Hello GZW community,

With the Winds of War (0.3) update nearing its spring release, it’s time to dig into what you can look forward to. Our last devlogs covered the upcoming Quality of Life changes and new Weapons & Gear, and now we’re turning our attention to the evolving world of Lamang itself.

At the heart of Gray Zone Warfare is immersion— we strive to build a world that feels alive, dangerous, and reactive. The Day/Night cycle was only the beginning. With Update 0.3, we’re pushing that further with an all-new dynamic Weather System and dozens of new locations that deepen the island’s atmosphere and make exploration more meaningful.

EXPLORE THE EVOLVING WORLD OF LAMANG
With every major update, the world of Gray Zone Warfare will continue to grow richer and denser, and Winds of War is no exception. This update introduces over 60 new locations, each crafted with a specific purpose and designed to deepen Lamang’s atmosphere. Every site reinforces the game’s lore and reflects a world shaped by an unprecedented disaster.

You’ll encounter some standout new areas — from a hilltop restaurant and construction site to a radio station, sprawling poppy fields, and even a strip club. These locations add visual variety, environmental storytelling, and fresh tactical opportunities. Larger locations also serve as landmarks, making navigation through Lamang more intuitive.

We’ve also reworked some existing areas to offer a more refined experience. That familiar piece of cover you used to rely on? It might not be there anymore. Adapting to these subtle changes is part of surviving in a constantly shifting world.

As you explore new and reworked locations, you might stumble upon hidden crates filled with valuable loot. This ties into our ongoing improvements to the loot system — we want exploration to feel truly rewarding. The gear you find in the field is now more likely to be something you’ll want to keep, use, and build your loadout around.

SEIZE AND CONTROL THE COMBAT OUTPOSTS
One of the biggest additions in Winds of War is the introduction of Combat Outposts (COPs). These strategic locations are spread across Lamang and can be captured, occupied, and held for strategic advantage. Lock one down, and your faction gets access to respawns, vendors, and resupply — all without returning to base.

There are 36 new outposts, split between minor and major types. Minor COPs are lightly defended and quicker to secure, while major ones offer tougher resistance. Holding a major outpost in PvEvP (Warfare) means stronger defensive positions and better area control.

In PvE (Joint Operations) mode, you’ll be able to capture COPs too, but without faction rivalry. That means all factions can take and use the same outpost simultaneously, making them shared safe zones.

TRACK DOWN VULTURE, THE NEW MYSTERIOUS VENDOR
Major Combat Outposts come with a twist: two grant access to an elusive black market dealer known only as Vulture. Secure one of these specific COPs and you’ll unlock his stash of contraband. The selected COPs are the same across all servers, but rotate periodically, so keep an eye out.

Vulture is no hero. He was deep in the black market scene well before the evacuation of Lamang, and the chaos that followed gave his underground empire room to thrive. Now, his network combs the island for valuable gear and sells it to whoever pays the most.

In other words, Vulture offers weapons and equipment lost by other PMCs in challenging missions. If someone dropped it, and you’ve got the cash, it might be yours next.

EXPERIENCE THE AUTHENTIC WEATHER SYSTEM
When building the world of Gray Zone Warfare, our goal has always been to introduce real-life elements that impact how each playthrough unfolds. The day and night cycle was just the first step — a simple mission can become a tense scramble for survival once darkness falls and you’re caught unprepared.

With the Winds of War update, we’re taking that approach further with a brand-new dynamic weather system. This update adds eleven distinct weather presets — from clear skies and light overcast to dense mist and violent lightning storms. In its first iteration, weather will apply globally across the entire island. But we’re already planning for local weather in future updates, where it might be sunny in Ban Pa and storming in Fort Narith.

Each weather type dynamically interacts with variables like wind speed and direction, temperature, and humidity. Cloud coverage changes constantly, affecting ambient light and shadows. No two sunrises or sunsets will look the same, creating a world that feels alive and constantly shifting.

To ground the weather system in authenticity, we teamed up with meteorological experts at Meteosource to gather real-world data from Southeast Asia. Using this foundation, we built over 80 unique weather schedules that reflect genuine regional patterns, each lasting three in-game days and transitioning gradually to mirror the natural rhythm of real-world weather.

ENGAGE WITH THE ELEMENTS
Rain plays a significant role, and we’ve gone to great lengths to replicate how it behaves in real life: forming puddles with ripples, flowing down rooftops and terrain, muddying rivers, and flooding rice fields.

And it isn’t just about the visuals — the whole weather system has direct gameplay implications. Your clothing responds to wetness, scopes can fog up, and raindrops can hit your field of view — unless you’re wearing gear to shield against it. Helmets, caps, and glasses all factor into visibility, and with the right combo, can reduce or eliminate visual interference entirely.

Weather brings new challenges to the battlefield. High temperatures and humidity will drain your hydration faster. Flooded rice fields slow your movement and wear down your stamina. Lightning strikes can silhouette you in the open, making shadow cover more critical.

And this is just the beginning. In future updates, we plan to expand the weather system with seasonal schedules, dynamic events like overflowing rivers that block paths or typhoons that ground aerial transport. Eventually, weather will also influence ballistics, affecting every shot you take.

HEAR THE WORLD COME TO LIFE
An immersive world isn’t just about what you see — it’s also about what you hear. We’ve reworked the game’s ambient audio to be more dynamic and reactive, reflecting your environment and your situation. Rain, wind, and even cloud cover now influence the in-game sounds — sometimes helping you detect threats, other times masking them entirely.

We’ve added new effects like splashing footsteps in flooded terrain or the distant rumble of thunder erupting into sudden, deafening cracks. With these changes, the island doesn’t just look more alive—it sounds more alive, too.

Fauna audio has also been expanded and refined. Wildlife is more varied and now responds to weather, going completely silent or growing louder in different conditions.
