Core Reworks & New Features in 0.4 | Devlog

Hey everyone,

With the Spearhead update, Gray Zone Warfare is set to feel like a completely new game. By increasing player agency, clarifying in-game systems, and striking a better balance between realism and gameplay, this update brings major changes across the board.

Beyond the player-driven improvements and new content covered in our previous devlogs, it also introduces major reworks to the core game loop, progression, vendors, and economy, alongside a range of new features.

Watch the VIDEO DEVLOG or read the SUMMARY below to learn more.

Supporter Preview, Full Update Release, and Sale Incoming

We’re happy to announce that the Spearhead update launches on March 31, with Supporter Edition owners gaining early access on March 27. Any progress made during this preview will carry over to the official launch. We will publish all necessary information on how to access the update preview in advance.

If you’re still deciding whether to get Gray Zone Warfare or upgrade to one of the game’s editions, we may be able to make that decision a little easier. A sale is coming. We are not specifying the exact date, but it will take place sometime before the release of 0.4.

This sale will also mark a clear milestone among supporters. To further recognize those who have supported us since the beginning, we will introduce exclusive morale patches. Supporters who join during the upcoming sale or after it will receive a patch with silver etching, while OG supporters who joined before the sale will receive not only the silver one, but also a special gold one.

We are also hosting a Q&A Dev Stream on March 19, where we will answer your questions live on our Twitch channel.

In addition, a new Twitch Drops campaign will begin alongside the update’s release on March 31. More details will be shared soon.

Video Summary - Core Reworks & New Features in 0.4

Onboarding

  • To improve the first-time user experience, we created a dedicated area featuring an obstacle course, an infirmary tent, and a shooting range, along with a tutorial that introduces the game’s basic mechanics.

  • The tutorial can be completed in just a few minutes and can be skipped if preferred.

  • We’ve added a detailed in-game Field Manual with over 110 pages covering nearly every feature in the game.
Progression, Reputation, and Task System

  • The task system and vendor leveling have been fully redesigned to deliver a replayable progression loop that gives players more agency and freedom.

  • The majority of tasks are now replayable (apart from Starter Town tasks).

  • Tasks are divided into three categories:

    • Main Tasks - unveiling your main story as a PMC

    • Side Tasks - expanding on the mysterious lore of Lamang

    • Contracts - offering simpler objectives

  • With 100+ new Tasks and Contracts and 50+ updated ones, the total number of tasks now exceeds 250.

  • Tasks now feature more engaging gameplay, with added puzzles and new interactions with the world.

  • Distribution:

    • Tasks have been redistributed throughout Lamang to encourage broader exploration beyond major points of interest. This also means less waiting for AI NPCs to respawn in heavily frequented locations.

    • Some tasks now take place outside of urban areas, creating new opportunities for jungle warfare.

    • The map is now divided into regions. These regions are open to exploration, but tasks within each one are unlocked through your progress.

    • As you earn reputation with vendors by completing tasks and trading items, you level up and unlock new regions, more dangerous and rewarding tasks, and access to better weapons, gear, and items.

    • Map regions are divided into several tiers based on the AI NPC factions that occupy them. Enemies have been redesigned so that each faction is defined by unique faces, hairstyles, clothing, gear, weapons, and carried loot.

    • A set number of tasks will always be available across the map, ensuring there is always something to complete.

  • Rewards:

    • Completing a task for the first time grants a larger reputation boost.

    • Task rewards have been rebalanced to place a greater emphasis on money rather than items.

    • Some tasks also unlock new vendor stock.

    • Death results in task failure and, in most cases, makes the task temporarily unavailable before it can be attempted again. After a certain amount of time has passed, the task will have another chance to appear in your task pool. Exceptions include tasks such as Hazardous Treasures or Terminal Initiative.

    • Upon failing a task, you lose reputation equal to 10% of the amount you would have gained on success. For example, if a vendor would reward you with 200 reputation points for completing the task, failing it will cost you 20 reputation points.

  • Tasks are no longer tied to a specific time of day.

  • Support for squad task completion is planned for a patch following 0.4 (ahead of 0.5), as it still requires further balancing.

UI & Map

  • The tactical map has been redesigned to improve clarity and navigation.

  • All available tasks are now shown on the map, including the approximate locations of the objectives, and can be accepted directly from the map instead of through the task list.

  • Vendors can now also send attachments in messages, including images that can be opened and viewed.

Vendors & Economy

  • Vendors’ stock has been completely reworked to:

    • Give you more options when making purchases

    • Create a healthier balance in weapons and reduce reliance on the M4 meta

  • Each vendor’s stock is now more specialized. For example, Handshake focuses primarily on Western gear, while Artisan sells civilian equipment and containers to improve your locker.

  • Access to vendors is tied to different player rank milestones

  • Level 1 vendors offer low-tier items, with better equipment unlocking progressively as you advance.

  • Overall pricing has been adjusted, making most items more expensive, especially at the high end.

  • A significant number of items now come exclusively from world loot.

  • Vendors now sell secure containers.

  • All items sold by vendors now have unlimited stock.
Lore

  • The world’s lore has been expanded significantly. You will delve deeper into Lamang’s history, uncover some of its darkest secrets, and move one step closer to unraveling the mystery of The Event.

  • You can uncover the lore through the world itself. Lamang has undergone major changes, and its locations are now filled with details and varied assets that hint at the island’s dark history.

  • We’ve added 351 intel items to explore (magazines, letters, posters…), 68 of which are lootable.

  • Each AI enemy faction now has a distinct background that is reflected in its appearance, including its bosses.
AI Improvements

  • Adjusted AI NPC placement to make them sometimes spawn in groups.

  • Bosses now spawn together with their guards.

  • AI NPC groups now patrol designated areas.

  • Some of the AI NPCs now have new roles, such as bodyguards and sergeants, each distinguished by their appearance and gear.

  • We’re improving combat readability, making it easier to see when and how AI NPCs have been injured. We’ve added two types of hit reactions: shorter animations for light hits, and longer, more severe reactions for organ or bone hits.

  • We’ve adjusted AI behavior to prevent cases where enemies could seemingly detect player positions with unnatural accuracy or kill players with a single shot from long distances.

Player Statistics

  • The game now includes player statistics to track your progress over time.

  • More than 500 different statistics are tracked. For example: tasks completed, exploration progress, items collected, loot boxes opened, hidden stashes found, kilograms of food consumed, liters of blood lost, kilograms of ammunition used…

  • Most of these statistics will start tracking from Update 0.4 onward.

Tech Improvements

  • We continue to put significant effort into optimization. Although the world will be far richer and more detailed thanks to the team's hard work, the performance should remain in line with the major improvements delivered in Patch 0.3.5.0.

  • On lower-end hardware, such as RTX 3060-class GPUs and below, performance is showing improvements. On high-end hardware, such as RTX 4070 Ti-class GPUs, performance remains in line with the current version.

  • The team has also focused heavily on memory optimization. RAM usage is expected to drop by around 3 GB, helping reduce memory pressure on 16 GB systems.

  • We reworked and optimized the scope system, improving performance by approximately 50% compared to the current version.

  • Server performance is in its best state since 0.1, and further improvements should bring even fewer hitches, better hit registration, and less rubberbanding.

  • We are also continuing our anti-cheat efforts. Update 0.4 will improve wallhack detection and banning. We cannot share specific details, as we need to stay ahead of cheat developers. More improvements are planned over time.

  • NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 is coming in one of the patches following Update 0.4.

Let us know which upcoming improvements in 0.4 you’re most looking forward to, and post your questions for the stream in the comments!

Every Move Matters,
