The nights are drawing in and it’s been a little while since we last scanned what’s on the horizon, so it’s time for a fresh This Month in Sea of Thieves article! If you’ve already taken a glance at how long this article is, you’ll know that October’s set to be non-stop from start to finish, so let’s get right to it and uncover what you can expect to see on the seas this month.
Sea of Thieves Sail Design Competition – Until Friday, October 23rd
Budding shipwrights should be reaching for their pencils right about now – if they want to be in with a chance of seeing their sail design realised in-game, that is. From now until October 23rd, we’re inviting pirates to share their best and boldest designs for a set of sails with us on social media under the #SoTSailDesignComp tag. The top three designs as decided by our Art team will be put up in a public poll, and the ultimate winner of that round will find itself in-game as part of our next anniversary celebrations in March!
You can find a template image, terms and conditions and all the other relevant details in our dedicated article – give it a read now if you want to put your own artistic skills to the test!
Fight Nights – Every Tuesday
If the return of Last Ship Standing didn’t quell your urge to blow bits off each other’s ships, then Fight Nights is the Event for you. Each Tuesday that Last Ship Standing isn’t active, both Factions will be offering increased Allegiance and gold earnings from all Faction Battles you fight. If you’re chasing your next reward – perhaps one of the legendary Curses – then Fight Nights is your best chance to get ahead of the competition.
Emissaries of Fortune – Every Wednesday
Immediately following the Faction skirmishes of Fight Nights, the Trading Companies will be keen to get back to their regularly scheduled business. To encourage everyone to get in line, all the Companies will offer increased rewards to their Emissaries for a full 24 hours. All you need to do is raise an Emissary Flag and start raking in the riches!
‘Maiden Voyage (Bard’s Mix)’ Release – Friday, October 9th
Medieval music lovers are in for a treat this month, as our soundtrack expands to include the Bard’s Mix of a classic Sea of Thieves melody. You’ll be able to enjoy the reimagined tune on all the usual streaming platforms from October 9th. Give it a listen if you’d like to hear what our talented music types have been up to!
Bilge Rats Weekender – Friday, October 16th – Monday, October 19th
The next Bilge Rats Weekender will be landing in the middle of the month, promising all the usual things you’ve come to expect: Event-exclusive Smuggler Voyages, Firework Displays and a checklist of Challenges to put your skills to the test… all in return for Doubloons, of course.
As before, the Weekender will showcase a returning Event: this time it’s Reaper Fortress Mega Stashes! Battling through the waves of Dark Brethren Phantoms and Flameheart’s skeletons to complete a Reaper Fortress during the weekend may see you unlocking a Vault absolutely packed with treasure. Particularly lucky pirates might even find a Chest of Fortune awaiting them. But it’s not the end of the world if you don’t get lucky the first time, as completing just one Reaper Fortress during the Weekender, stash or no stash, will reward you with a tidy sum of Doubloons for your trouble.
October Game Update – Thursday, October 22nd
Just a few days later, the next monthly update is due to dock. Alongside all the usual tweaks to the game you’d expect from a mid-Season release, October has two highlights sure to catch your attention.
Firstly, Golden Sands Outpost will be making a reappearance as the latest Legendary Location to be added to Custom Seas, following its decisive victory in our player poll earlier this summer. Pirates will once again be able to explore this beloved Outpost, just as it was before it was besieged by Flameheart’s ravenous Reapers.
Secondly, fashion-conscious pirates will be delighted to hear that Outfit Saving arrives as part of this update. Now you’ll be able to store your selected ensemble within your Clothing Chest while you try out a different look, ready to be reworn at a moment’s notice. This way you’ll be free to experiment with your getup, without having to arduously search for the clothes you were just wearing if you’re not quite so enamoured with the new outfit. Go behind the scenes of Outfit Saving in September’s Sea of Thieves News below!
Season 21 Community Weekend – Friday, October 23rd – Monday, October 26th
Hardly a pause to catch your breath before Season 21 Community Weekend begins! The Community Emissary Grade will be making its return, promising up to two-and-a-half times the usual rewards if it hits Grade 5. All you have to do is watch any Sea of Thieves streamer on Twitch to help raise the Grade and increase the reward multiplier for all players.
Community Weekend staples such as Pop-Up Plunder and Picture Walls will also be returning, including a new Picture Wall at Golden Sands Outpost for any Custom Seas posing opportunities you’ve got planned. Merely logging in during the Event is well worth it, as it’ll grant you the free Season 21 Community Weekend Flag and a Voyage of Wild Luck.
That’s not all: as spooky season will be well and truly underway by then, we’ve expanded this Event to celebrate. Tricking or treating by posting naughty or nice maps to the Quest Board during Community Weekend will contribute to two new Community Goals, bringing everyone closer to the rewards they promise – while completing maps taken from the Board will reward you personally with the charming Pocket Pumpkin Emote!
Twitch Drops – Friday, October 23rd – Monday, October 26th
If boosted rewards weren’t enough to lure you over to Twitch during Community Weekend, there’s a tasty new selection of Drops running at the same time. The door is open to streamers of all sizes for the occasion, so watching any participating streamer in Twitch’s Sea of Thieves category – Partner or not – will see you start to unlock the goodies on offer. Included this time are the Stalwart Sea Dog Bucket, the Gilded Phoenix Wheel, Cannons and Capstan, and the exclusive Bat Cutout Emote.
Festival of the Damned – Tuesday, October 27th – Tuesday, November 3rd
Spine-chilling celebrations continue in the Festival of the Damned that kicks off right after Community Weekend, with its own collection of tricks and treats for you to sink your teeth into!
Jumping in during this Event will provide two cosmetics you’ll need for everything else going on: the Bucket of Confections Emote and the Soulflame Mask. With the emote, you’ll be able to offer Ghoulish Confections to anyone you meet – and enjoy the chaos that occurs if they dare to eat them. Share enough of them around, and you’ll be rewarded for your generosity with the ghostly Spiritfire Makeup.
The Bucket of Confections Emote is yours for the Event duration, but the Soulflame Mask is yours to keep even after it ends. Wear it throughout the Festival for a chance to earn extra Doubloons: visiting an active Fort of the Damned with the mask on will see you beset by Soulflame Skeletons, each worth a shiny Doubloon to everyone on the island when destroyed, even as you work towards unlocking the Candlelight of the Damned Lantern as a personal prize for your skelly-smashing efforts.
Pirate Emporium Halloween Sale – Wednesday, October 28th – Tuesday, November 3rd
Finally, the next Pirate Emporium sale is all set to run alongside the Festival of the Damned. Naturally, some of the scariest stock has been selected for inclusion, such as the Jack O’ Looter, Crimson Crypt and Graveyard Gladiator collections. There’ll be discounts of up to 30% to explore, so you’ll want to browse the full sale if you’re scrambling to assemble a last-minute creepy costume.
And all that finally brings us to the end of the month. With so much to keep track of, we hope you’ll check in on the Events Hub and our social channels for all the latest information as it goes live. We hope you enjoy all the treats – and tricks! – planned for October, and we’ll see you again in November for another round up as the scares subside and the winter months approach…
